House Mentor Logistics
- Your house will have 6-8 mentors every inning with an equitable spread of BE and FE-specific support
- During Week 1 of each inning, your mentors will introduce themselves via the House Slack channel to give you more information about themselves, their backgrounds, what support they can offer, etc.
Communicating with Your Mentors
You are encouraged to engage with your house mentors in the following ways:
- Office Hours: Mentors will host technical office hours every week of the inning, which will be included on your house calendar.
- 1:1 Sessions: Mentors will also host 1:1 mentoring sessions throughout the inning. They will post sign-up links in your house Slack channel, and will also be included in the House Mentors section of this database.
- Engaging in the Slack Channel: Feel free to post questions in your house Slack channel asking for mentor support! You can see more guidelines for engaging on Slack in the New to House? Start Here! section of this database.
Best Practices for Working with Your Mentors
- Practice your networking skills and reach out! Mentors are here to help you, but they can only help if they know what you need help with.
- Be respectful of their time. Mentors are volunteering their time in the Turing community because they are invested in your success! Be mindful of their time - make sure to show up to meetings you schedule and be responsive on Slack.
- Ask effective questions. The following are guidelines for asking specific types of questions.
- When asking technical questions, please follow this template:
- A summary of the problem you are trying to solve
- What you have tried so far
- The exact error message(s) you are getting
- A link to your Github repo/branch
- A screenshot of any relevant code snippets
- When asking professional questions, please follow the following template:
- A summary of the problem you are trying to solve
- A clear request for what help or support you need and how much time you are asking for a person to commit
- Build a relationship. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of all of your mentors’ wisdom. Many are Turing alumni, and they all work or have worked in software development and can provide you with valuable insight as you continue throughout your Turing journey and enter the technical field.
