Welcome to your Turing House! Turing Houses are designed as communities for current students to develop deeper relationships and a strong professional network. Houses are set up as a one-stop shop for mentorship, technical and PD collaboration, and social outlets. We have created 8 houses, named after prolific figures in STEM (See Who Are Our House Namesakes? section for more info!)

Your Experience

When you start Mod 1, you’ll be sorted into a House. You have direct access to a community that includes Mod 1, 2, 3, and 4 students, job seekers, alumni with jobs, mentors, and outside friends of Turing.

• Connecting with Current Students:
  • Your House will have a small group of FE and BE students from your cohort. We know it might feel challenging to be in class virtually in a sea of Zoom faces, so take this opportunity to connect with the smaller group of folks from your cohort who are also in your House.
  • Specific House time is scheduled for Wednesdays and Fridays - take a look at the “Your House Schedule” section below for more info!
• Seeking Help:
  • Mentors are in each House to support students and they will have both 1:1 time slots and larger group office hours opportunities available to ask questions
  • Please ask lots of questions in your House channel! In addition to mentors, there are some awesome alums in this channel who would love to support your technical and professional learning - all you have to do is ask! Please see below in the “Getting Started” section for norms on how to ask thoughtful questions in your House channel.
• Alumnihood:
  • When you graduate from Turing, you are not required to stay in your house, but you can! If you have a job, you can feel free to take on a mentorship role, or hang out in the channel to help support other students and alumni

Getting Started

I’ve been added to my House Slack channel; now what?

• Introduce yourself! Click on the pinned posts at the top of the channel page and find the “Intros” post. Thread your responses to the questions there!
• Check out the norms pinned to the channel (or see below)
  • When asking technical questions in your House channel, please follow the following template:
    • 1. A summary of the problem you are trying to solve
    • 2. What you have tried so far
    • 3. The exact error message(s) you are getting
    • 4. A link to your Github repo/branch
    • 5. A screenshot of any relevant code snippets
  • When asking professional questions in your House channel, please follow the following template:
    • 1. A summary of the problem you are trying to solve
    • 2. A clear request for what help or support you need and how much time you are asking for a person to commit
  • When using the House Zoom account:
    • The Zoom account and host key will be pinned to the channel, and is also included in the “Important Links” section of the House Directory. If you are the first person to log on you can create breakout rooms (e.g., BE Mod 1, Quiet Workspace, Mod 5, etc.)
• Start engaging with your House co-members and asking questions! The more you put into houses and connecting with folks, the more you’ll get out of it!

  • Mentors’ office hours can also be found on the House calendar!
• Wednesday afternoons
  • On Wednesday afternoons you will have an opportunity to connect with members of your house for Professional Development support. In weeks 1, 3, & 5 you will meet with your cohort house members and in weeks 2 & 4 you will meet with cross-program, cross-cohort groups to discuss your professional growth and deliverables.
• Friday afternoons
  • On Friday afternoons, you will have the opportunity to meet with the other members of your house to engage in some semi-structured connection and conversation. What you do with this time is relatively open, but there are LOTS of ideas in the Friday House Activities section!
